Municipal Election - what is next?

The municipal election has been completed now and unfortunately little change has taken place, as the majority of residents, on both sides of the spectrum, still have not made the mindshift, and out of habit still blindly voted for political parties, without considering other alternatives.

Mafube Business Forum (MBF) would like to congratulate the team of independent candidates on the initiative they have shown and the hard work they have done during their election campaign. Although the results do not reflect their efforts, a foundation has now been laid on which to build, in future. Also, there is now a growing awareness among political parties and councilors that they will have to be pull up their socks and that much more effort will have to be put in to improve and sustain service delivery in the community - it can not just be a little more pre- election “window dressing”!

The outcome of the election will have no bearing on the activities and future plans of MBF, and we will not deviate from our commitment to act for the benefit of our community at all times. We hope that the individual new councilors will have a greater sense of duty, specifically with regard to transparent management, public participation and good communication. In accordance with its constitution and objectives, MBF will continue to put pressure on the municipal council, management and the national government, in order to create a business climate that will promote progress, economic growth and job creation in our region.

The implementation of our legal action, which involves the implementation of the "Stakeholder's Compact", will continue, and will stipulate the following, among others:

• A functional oversight committee with extensive powers to ensure proper governance and financial management; • a ring-fenced infrastructure account for locally-generated revenue; • guaranteed public participation; • transparency and accountability; and • a conditional amnesty on all outstanding municipal levies and tariffs.

Residents, business owners and taxpayers are welcome to visit our offices at 18A Church Street during our business hours, on Mondays to Thursdays from 08h30 to 16h00 and Fridays from 08h30 to 12h30, or contact Marina on WhatsApp on 079 145 4295. Or send a email to info@mafubebf.org
